Comparison Between Covaxin, Covishield and Sputnik V Vaccines

Which vaccine is better, efficiency rate, price, less side effects etc.

The second wave of corona virus came in India in the month of March 2021. From January 2021, India had already started its COVID-19 vaccination drive. Two vaccines in India depend on vaccination. The first is Covaxin and the second is Covishield. Covaxin then this vaccine is developed by Hyderabad based company Bharat Biotech. Whereas, Covishield is developed by the SERUM Institute of India (SII).

The Drugs Controller General of India’s (DCGI) has approved Covishield and Covaxin vaccines for restricted use against Covid-19 in the country. This has been approved when Covishield, Covaxin and BNT162b2 applied to Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) seeking emergency use approval.

Both the vaccine have received a restricted use approval in the emergency situation. This means that the vaccine has been approved for use despite the companies have not completed the clinical trials, but this approval is however a subject to regular submission of safety, efficacy (measure of its ability to bring down the cases of Covid-19) and immunogenicity (is its ability to prompt an immune response) data from their ongoing trails.

Now recently Russia based Covid-19 Vaccination also emerged as the third-best choice in India named Sputnik V. As the Vaccination drive is ongoing in India there are plenty of options with every individual for getting dose of Covishield, Covaxin, or Sputnik V.

Why Emergency Approval?

While looking at the pandemic situation the Indian Government wanted a vaccine which is ready at earliest also the mutation of Sars-CoV-2 virus in countries like U.K which is spreading all over the globe. According to many researchers we can see 3rd wave in the month of October.

Lets us tell you that each vaccination differs from one another and has its own side effects with the rate of efficacy. It is you completely on you to choose a vaccine, in this blog, we are letting you know the basic difference among three vaccines.

What doctor says about Vaccine?

According to Dr. Randeep Gulleria, director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences said that “the efficacy reports of Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V, and Moderna is more or less the same. Hence one should not judge vaccination by just its efficacy reports. Every vaccination works differently. Some by generation antibodies, memory cells, and cell-mediated immunity. Hence we cannot suggest individuals take that vaccine and should not take that vaccination. It is advised that must take you Jabs on your tune arrive and make a wall against a further wave of Corona.

It is India’s only indigenous Covid-19 vaccine. Covaxin is developed by Bharat Biotech, Hyderabad in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Virology, Pune. The scientific name of this Corona Virus Vaccination is BBV152.

It is an inactivated vaccine which is developed by inactivating (killing) the live microorganism that causes the diseases. This destroys the ability of the Pathogen to replicate, but keeps it intact so the immune system can still recognizes it and produce an immune response. It is expected to target more than just the spike protein. It also aims to develop and immune response to the nucleocapsid protein (the shell of the virus that encloses its genetic material).

Covaxin is more likely to work against newer variants of the virus, including the UK variant as it contains immunogens (epitopes) from the genes in addition to those from spike protein.

Immunogens is a stimulus that produces a humoral or cell-mediated immune response, whereas antigens are any substance that binds specifically to an antibody. All immunogens are antigens, but all antigens may not be immunogens. The approval of Covaxin ensures Indian has an additional vaccine shield especially against potential mutant strains in a dynamic pandemic situation.

Covishield name is given to an Oxford’s AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine candidate which is technically referred as AZD1222 or ChAdOx 1 nCoV19. It is produced by Oxford University in collaboration with Swedish-British drugmaker AstraZeneca and Serum Institute of Technology is the manufacturing partner in India.

It is based on a weakened version of a common cold virus or the adenovirus found in chimpanzees. The viral vector contains the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein(protrusions) present on the outer surface of the virus that help it bind with the human cell. The body’s immune system is supposed to recognize this protein as a threat, and work on building antibodies against it. It had triggered an immune response in humans against the novel coronavirus in early trails and is considered to the one of the global frontrunners for the Covid-19 vaccine.

Vaccine Covishield
Scientific Name Astra Zeneca
Storage Temperature 2-8 Degree Centigrade

While Sputnik V is the only vaccination of Covid-19 which can be used as a single dose. The other name of Sputnik V is GAM-COVID-VAC.
