The Drugs Controller General of India’s (DCGI) has approved Covishield and Covaxin vaccines for restricted use against Covid-19 in the country. This has been approved when Covishield, Covaxin and BNT162b2 applied to Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) seeking emergency use approval.

Both the vaccine have received a restricted use approval in the emergency situation. This means that the vaccine has been approved for use despite the companies have not completed the clinical trials, but this approval is however a subject to regular submission of safety, efficacy (measure of its ability to bring down the cases of Covid-19) and immunogenicity (is its ability to prompt an immune response) data from their ongoing trails.

It is India’s only indigenous Covid-19 vaccine. Covaxin is developed by Bharat Biotech, Hyderabad in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Virology, Pune. The scientific name of this Corona Virus Vaccination is BBV152.

It is an inactivated vaccine which is developed by inactivating (killing) the live microorganism that causes the diseases. Immunogens is a stimulus that produces a humoral or cell-mediated immune response, whereas antigens are any substance that binds specifically to an antibody. All immunogens are antigens, but all antigens may not be immunogens. Covishield name is given to an Oxford’s AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine candidate which is technically referred as AZD1222 or ChAdOx 1 nCoV19. It is produced by Oxford University in collaboration with Swedish-British drugmaker AstraZeneca and Serum Institute of Technology is the manufacturing partner in India.

It is based on a weakened version of a common cold virus or the adenovirus found in chimpanzees. The viral vector contains the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein(protrusions) present on the outer surface of the virus that help it bind with the human cell. The body’s immune system is supposed to recognize this protein as a threat, and work on building antibodies against it. It had triggered an immune response in humans against the novel coronavirus in early trails and is considered to the one of the global frontrunners for the Covid-19 vaccine.

The Sputnik V Covid Vaccine is a Russian-based vaccine. This is the third-largest used Covid-19 Vaccine. It is developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Why it is famous among Covid-19 vaccination in India? It is because the other two vaccination will be completed when you have their two doses. While Sputnik V is the only vaccination of Covid-19 which can be used as a single dose. The other name of Sputnik V is GAM-COVID-VAC.
